Traditional detachable navigation lights consist of a socket and a detachable pole. The pole has a light bulb or LEDs located at one end of the pole. The LEDs are an advancement in reliability and reduced power consumption, but do not solve the bigger problem at the other end. The problem at the other end is electrical contacts. The metal electrical contacts and water, especially salt water, have two adversaries: Corrosion ‐ salt water is an electrolyte that provides a path for metal ions to migrate from one electrical contact to the other. The other adversary is oxidization (copper oxide for copper – the green stuff). Both combine to degrade and destroy metal electrical contacts. The bottom line is that sooner or later there is no light when you need it.
The Aluna Light Pole ™ is a patented light conduit technology that replaces electrical contacts with light coupling. The light conduit is essentially a large diameter optical fiber. There are no electrical contacts to corrode and the removable light pole contains no electrical components. The LED light source and driver is encapsulated in the plug base and is waterproof. The LED driver has a wide operating voltage range (10.5-26 VDC) and maintains constant LED brightness throughout. The Aluna Light Pole ™ is inserted into a socket just as in traditional navigation lights, except there are no electrical contacts. Light is projected into the Aluna Light Pole ™ and is emitted from the other end. Aluna Light Pole ™ technology sets a new standard of reliability in detachable navigation lights.

Advantages of Aluna Light Pole ™ over traditional removable stern lights
- Light coupling eliminates the problematic electrical contacts of traditional plugin stern lights - no need to replace pole and socket periodically due to corroded contacts
- Aluna Light Pole ™ is rugged and contains no electrical components - no bulbs, covers or LEDs to replace, damage or lose
- Aluna Light Pole ™ is not effected by exposure to water in use or storage - traditional plugin stern lights electrical contacts corrode in use and in storage when exposed to water
- Plug base features an encapsulated LED and IC driver module for waterproof reliability and long life - bulbs and LEDs at the end of the light pole are vulnerable to elements and damage
- IC LED drive maintains constant LED intensity over wide input voltage range - resistor circuit LED intensity varies with input voltage
- IC LED drive prevents damage to the LED from input voltages higher than nominal (12 VDC) - - voltages higher than 12 VDC can damage resistor LED drive circuits
- Drop in replacement for many traditional removable navigation lights - similar mounting and footprint, the same wiring (2 wire)
